Researchers have long confirmed the benefits of yoga and meditation for both physical and mental health. These practices are tied to reduction in anxiety and stress among many other advantages. Recently, a new study out of the Benson-Henry Institute for Mind Body Medicine found that those who regularly utilize deep relaxation techniques may require fewer doctor visits. Analyzing data on over 4,400 patients, researchers found that patients using relaxation response training had “an average 43 percent reduction in their use of health services.” In comparison, health services among patients who did not use relaxation response training remained unchanged. Study author Dr. James Stahl explained that because meditation and yoga techniques promote generalized wellness, doctor visits and healthcare resources tend not to be as necessary.
