According to New York City’s Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, at least one in five New Yorkers suffer from some type of mental health issue — ranging from depression to suicidal thoughts to substance abuse to other psychological disorders. The white paper report comes as a result of Mayor Bill de Blaiso’s mental health initiative, NYC Thrive; the initiative aims to prevent and treat psychological disorders across the city of New York. The mayor’s office has pledged to devote $386 million over the next three years to mental health support. De Blaiso and his wife Chirlane McCray are leading advocates for mental health awareness.
