Life Coaching is a healing service that can a person make a significant life change or reach specific goals. Those who offer life coaching are typically trained to be a coach and to facilitate change in the clients they work with. However, it should be noted that life coaches are not therapists or psychologists. Instead, Life Coaches provide mentoring-like services to facilitate the attainment of a goal or a desired life change. Typically, those who seek Life Coaching services are those who are already successful to some degree, who are not experiencing a debilitating psychological illness, and who recognize that having professional support can bring about change that they otherwise could not attain.
How Does Life Coaching Work?
Essentially, the client-coach relationship is meant to be empowering. A person working with a Life Coach often feels empowered at the end of a session to take action on the life change he or she wants to make. A Life Coach may schedule weekly sessions with a client and provide them with the drive and guidance a client needs to improve their career, strengthen relationships, or achieve a goal. Life coaches can help a client:
- recognize their skills
- clarify their dreams
- establish goals to reach their wishes
- move past challenges or obstacles that stand in the way of reaching goals
It’s common for an individual to begin their work with a Life Coach by completing an assessment questionnaire. This is a means for the Life Coach to gain information on where their client is now, where they’ve been, and the direction in which they would like their life to go. This initial questionnaire also provides a Life Coach with information about obstacles, problems, blocks, or concerns that a person might have about reaching his or her goals. For instance, someone who wants to get sober, may have many reservations about doing so. A person might not feel ready to let go of a substance that he or she has relied on for many months or years. A Life Coach can provide a client with inspiration by reminding him or her of the life that is possible without drinking or using drugs.
It should be noted that Life Coaching is not meant to be the only means of healing a psychological concern, such as addiction, depression, anxiety, or bipolar disorder. Instead, the mentorship that Life Coaching offers can be one component of a larger treatment plan. For these psychological illnesses, treatment requires psychotherapy and medication.
Working with a Life Coach
Each Life Coach session will be an opportunity to discuss how a client has moved toward or away from the desired goal or life change. Frequently, a Life Coach will provide homework so that a client is making progress between sessions. Homework might include writing in a journal, creating plans for reaching a goal, and taking action. A Life Coach may also hold their clients accountable for taking the action steps they said they would make. It’s common to work with a Life Coach for a period of a few months or longer, depending upon the frequency of sessions and the goals to be accomplished.
